I am sure you have heard the saying “Life is a journey and not a destination”.

After a 25 year career in business, to say I have learned a lot about marketing and sales would be a understatement.  Marketing and sales have changed dramatically over the last 10 years.  Most small business owners simply can’t or don’t want to keep up with all the changes.

Personally for me, I have always loved to learn and apply new and innovative strategies that actually work.   The challenge for most small business owners is finding the right mix of strategies and tactics that are automatic, affordable and a part of an overall marketing system.  By the way S.Y.S.T.E.M. stands for Save, Your, Self, Time, Effort and Money.  In his book “Duct Tape Marketing” the author John Jantsch talks about the concept of “strategies before tactics” and how marketing is a system.  Most small business owners are familiar with other systems in their business like accounting systems and payroll systems but don’t consider marketing as a system but before I share more on these concepts, let me tell you more about my journey.

Shortly after I graduated from college I started a business out of my parents garage.  I had identified an opportunity in the marketplace and capitalized on a product and service that was both expensive and environmentally unfriendly.  If you would like to learn more about that business click here.  What a blast we had growing a business from zero in revenue to many millions.  It wasn’t easy but it was worth it.  I made many friends in the industry, here is a word of advice always be professional, friendly and kind to your competition. No don’t email them your customer list but make friends. In my case it paid off in spades, a large regional competitor wanted to expand in the area and we struck a deal.  I was thrilled because I had done what many small business owners dream of doing!  You see around that time my husband Charlie and I had finally become parents to a beautiful baby girl.  I knew those first few years were going to fly by and I didn’t want to look back with any regrets.

During those first few years and that special time I had raising my daughter other small business owners started asking me to help them with their marketing and sales.  I found that I really enjoyed it and my clients were telling me that they appreciated the practical “been there and done that” no nonsense approach to the marketing “tactics” that I shared.

There is that word “tactics” again, remember Jantsch talks about strategies BEFORE Tactics?  Some of the tactics I was helping my clients do were simple things like email marketing, direct mail marketing, thank you card campaigns.  I quickly saw a few challenges.

Here are the biggest challenges I saw:

  • Businesses had no system or methodology to follow up and nurture potential clients and customers.
  • Most businesses had no clear way of distinguishing themselves from their competition, and as a result ended up competing on price.
  • Most businesses were doing a terrible job of tracking their return on investment from advertising and thus were wasting significant amounts of money on expensive advertising that wasn’t really getting them any business.
  • Business owners had a hard time committing to any one set of marketing tactics, and would quickly get distracted by “the marketing tactic” of the week.

All of these challenges can be fixed by adopting the philosophy of “Strategy Before Tactics”.

As soon as I saw the Duct Tape Marketing System, I realized that it was exactly what my clients needed. It teaches a business owner how to create a marketing strategy that helps them get more of their ideal clients or customers, it also teaches them the right ways to do advertising, lead generation, and sales.

Honestly, I felt both elated and disappointed because as successful as my own business was I couldn’t help but think how much more successful it could have been “had I known then what I know now”. As I said in the beginning “Life is a journey and not a destination” so now I get to focus on helping other people grow amazing businesses.
